Vibration Isolation for Tenerife’s Tramway System
Enhanced environment and long-term protection for buildings
The Tranvía de Tenerife is the only rail transport system in the Canary Islands. Since 2007, Line 1 has connected Santa Cruz de Tenerife and San Cristóbal de la Laguna, carrying more than 30,000 passengers per day along its 12.5-kilometre route.
From the outset, minimizing structure-borne noise and vibrations in densely built-up urban areas was a key requirement. Getzner implemented mass-spring systems using Sylomer® S210 to ensure sustainable vibration isolation and long-term protection for surrounding buildings.
The challenge
- Tram operation in a densely populated urban environment
- Strict international and Spanish vibration limits
- Long-term reliability over decades of continuous service
The Getzner solution
Getzner installed elastically supported track slabs with a mass-spring system based on Sylomer® S210 (28 mm) along the 12.5 km route.
After 18 years of continuous operation, the system’s performance was comprehensively reviewed together with Metropolitano de Tenerife, S.A..

To verify long-term effectiveness
- The natural frequency of the system was measured at 23 locations in accordance with ISO 7626-5:2019-12.
- Measurements were conducted in key sections, including Calle Imeldo Serís near the Teatro Guimerá.
- Vibration levels in adjacent buildings were assessed and compared with the ISO 2631 series and the Spanish regulation Real Decreto 1367/2007.

Results
- Average natural frequency: 23.2 Hz (below the calculated 25.5 Hz)
- Vibration levels significantly below the legal limits of 4 mm/s² and 5.6 mm/s²
- Reliable dynamic behavior maintained after nearly two decades

Advantages for customers
- Proven long-term performance over 18 years of operation
- Maximum vibration levels in surrounding buildings well below international and local standards
- Maintenance-free system with stable stiffness properties
- Sustainable protection of buildings and improved urban comfort
The mass-spring system made of Sylomer® from Getzner has proven itself to be a reliable, durable solution for tram applications. After 18 years of continuous operation, the natural frequency is stable and the vibration levels are well below the relevant limit values. The ongoing durability and effectiveness of the system are beyond impressive.
