Standard-gauge railway
Less wear and lower life cycle costs for operators of standard gauge railways
Standard gauge railway traffic is defined by an axle load of up to 25 metric tons and a speed of up to 200 km/h. A bearing with products and solutions from Getzner reduces wear on the railway superstructure components. Rails, sleepers or the ballast are protected. This results in lower upkeep and lower life cycle costs for the railway operators. Residents and neighbouring buildings are also protected from disruptive vibrations.
- Highly effective vibration protection
- Reduction of structure-borne noise
- Lower upkeep and life cycle costs
- Less wear of superstructure components
- Higher track stability
- System remains effective for the entire life cycle of the superstructure

Case studies
Getzner and their partners successfully implement standard-gauge railway projects worldwide.
Challenges
The altitude of the village of Samedan is 1700 metres above sea level
Unusual geological conditions are also present: the tunnel and track are located in ground water
Temperatures can fall as low as minus 30 degrees Celsius in the winter months
„From our perspective, the extensive know-how of the Getzner technical team made a very valuable contribution to the successful implementation of the project. On the one hand, they performed the calculations for the resilient bedding of the mass-spring system and the transition areas, while on the other, they delivered a solution that met the stringent vibration requirements as set out in the IEFC specification.“Leo Hirschbühl, GPL – overall project manager for Rhätische Bahn AG
Challenges
Renewing all the railway superstructure over 60 kilometres
Efficiently protecting buildings in close proximity to the track – despite the higher train speeds that have been planned
Since the completion of the construction work, the track, which was previously designed to accommodate a top speed of 120 km/h, can now be used by trains travelling at speeds up to 160 km/h
„The cooperation with the Getzner team was exemplary. The quality of the sleeper pads was consistently high and enabled us to affix them to our concrete sleepers without any trouble. Deliveries were also excellently coordinated: they arrived on time and in the agreed volume.“Gundolf Spitzner, Head of European Sales, RAIL.ONE GmbH
