Vibration Protection for Hainwerk & Friedrich

Berlin is growing. At the same time, the demands placed on modern buildings are increasing: they must be sustainable, energy-efficient, and resource-conscious without compromising comfort or quality of life. With Hainwerk & Friedrich, a new building ensemble is being created in Berlin-Friedrichshain that fulfills exactly these ambitions. The project combines residential, office, and commercial spaces in a forward-looking concept based on hybrid timber construction, renewable energy, and climate-friendly operation. However, sustainable urban development today means above all making use of existing potential within the urban environment. And this is precisely where the real challenge begins.

Building in an Urban Area

Where the City Comes to Life

The construction site is located directly at the intersection of Warschauer Straße and Revaler Straße. Trams shape the cityscape here and provide excellent connectivity. While this is a clear advantage for mobility, it places special demands on buildings. Vibrations generated by tram operations spread through the ground and can be perceived inside buildings as disturbing structure-borne or secondary airborne noise. To ensure that future residents and users of Hainwerk & Friedrich can benefit from the urban location without experiencing its drawbacks, an effective vibration isolation concept was integrated into the planning process from an early stage.

Vibration Protection

Comfort Begins Beneath the Building

Based on extensive measurements and calculations, the experts involved developed a concept for the holistic isolation of the building ensemble. The structure was not only elastically supported beneath the foundation slab. The basement exterior walls were also specifically isolated from the surrounding soil. The combination of various Sylomer® and Relomer® products reduces the transmission of vibrations at the point where they could otherwise enter the building. This creates the foundation for quiet living and working environments, even though the building is located in one of Berlin’s most dynamic areas.

Relomer® – Recycled PUR

Sustainability Down to the Last Detail

The project’s goal of using resources as efficiently as possible is also reflected in its vibration isolation concept. For the first time, the new generation of recycling-based sidewall mats made from Relomer® was used. The material is produced entirely from recycled polyurethane and supports the circular economy without compromising performance or durability. As a result, the vibration isolation system integrates seamlessly into the project’s overall sustainability strategy.

Thanks to the low weight of the Relomer® mats, they are easy to handle and install while delivering at least the same performance as comparable, heavier solutions.
