Quiet place to living next to the railway line

In the Stühlinger district of Freiburg, in the immediate vicinity of the main railway station, two new residential buildings are being constructed, comprising a total of 115 flats. The project exemplifies forward-looking inner-city living, combining comfort, sustainability and a prime location.

Due to the adjacent railway tracks and heavy rail traffic, particular emphasis was placed on developing a well-thought-out vibration protection concept. The aim was to create a quiet and high-quality living environment despite the high dynamic loads.

This is achieved through full-area elastic building isolation. A total of 2,882 m² of floor mats and 808 m² of side mats made from Sylomer® and Sylodyn® were installed, enabling effective vibration isolation of the building structures from the ground. This ensures that disruptive vibrations are reduced in the long term and a high level of living comfort is guaranteed.

Living in an urban areas

The challenge

The immediate proximity to railway tracks and the main station places high demands on the vibration protection of buildings. Regular train traffic generates vibrations which propagate through the ground and can be transmitted into the building structure. Without appropriate measures, these transmitted vibrations would not only result in perceptible vibrations but also cause audible secondary noise. Both effects can significantly impair living comfort. Furthermore, the construction project is located in an earthquake-prone area, which meant that additional requirements had to be taken into account in the structural design. It is therefore crucial to integrate solutions as early as the planning phase that ensure the building is effectively isolated from the ground in terms of vibration.

Engineered for vibration control

The solution

To reduce the transmission of vibrations, the buildings were fitted with full-surface elastic bearings. The carefully selected combination of Sylomer® and Sylodyn® materials allows for precise adaptation to the loads and frequencies encountered.

The elastic bearings interrupt direct contact between the structure and the ground. This effectively dampens vibrations before they can enter the building structure. At the same time, the materials ensure consistent long-term performance, even under continuous loading.

The application

Full-surface building isolation using Sylomer® and Sylodyn® enables vibrations to be effectively reduced. The elastic separating layer between the foundations and the building reliably absorbs vibration energy without requiring any changes to the building’s structure. At the same time, the solution offers the advantages of a structurally simple design, straightforward installation and relatively simple preparation of the sub-base.
