Footstep noise: Fleet feet

Depending on their weight and speed, people make noise when they walk. The resulting footstep noise can be transmitted to nearby rooms via walls and ceilings, causing annoyance. The relevant values are set forth in DIN 4109 for multi-story residential dwellings. Designers can help block transmission of footstep noise by isolating components which propagate the vibrations. Isolation of this kind can be carried with full surface, strip or discrete bearings. For new building construction, the use of insulation mats for footstep noise on a floating base has become the most common method, and the special solutions developed by Getzner Werkstoffe are frequently used for renovation projects.
